Yes, it’s possible.

by Michelle B. Araneta

Just the other night I was asked,

“If you’re married, how can it be rape?”

No matter how many times I have been asked this question in the past,it still amazes me that so many people continue to ask it.

The true understanding of rape, even sexual assault, comes from recognizing and comprehending the difference between an act that is sexual in nature and, an act to gain and/or maintain power and control over a person. These are two very different acts that should not be misinterpreted to be one and the same.

Rape is an act of power and control. The sexual nature of rape is just the means used to gain and/or maintain power and control over a person.

When one understands this fact, one will understand that rape in a marriage is very possible.

Exactly! Rape is rape is rape — no matter if it is a stranger, someone that they date, or they are married to. We need to make sure that ALL victims of rape are truly protected and offered safety and recovery. Absolutely, too — no one should ever “act to gain and/or maintain power and control over a person”.

    • Thank you so much for the reblog! I sat at my computer for hours trying to expand on this fact, but I struggled with my words.

Rape is mostly an idea or concept to most purely because of what society has led them to believe. The truth and facts about rape need to be brought out into the light. Rape is a form of abuse. Therefore there are no boundaries as to who can and cannot be raped.

When I can grasp hold of my words, I will write more about rape in hopes of educating those that are truly misinformed.

      Thank you again.

  2. There is so much educating that must be done in the world. Thank you for always being a solid pioneer, Michelle. There is power and influence in what you do and how you choose to live.

  3. Absolutely! But sadly people forget it because it’s kept under wraps. I’m happy you are making people aware of it! 🙂
